Very popular last year. Come and enjoy a traditional ‘Burns’ night on Wednesday, 25th January 2012 @ 7.30pm Lesley Grierson-Hill has foolishly been persuaded to host a ‘Burns Supper’ again on 25th January at her house. For those of you unfamiliar with what this is all about - Burns Night celebrates the life and poetry of Robert Burns who was Scotland's best-loved bard. Suppers have been held in his honour for over 200 years. So … with tradition and true Scottish ancestry in mind – you are invited to celebrate in style with: Cock- a-leekie soup Haggis (veggie version also), Neeps & Tatties A scottish dessert you would care to bring Entry requirements are really strict: you need to wear something with a Scottish flavour or bring a poem, ode or music suitable for the occasion or all of these !! (Experienced Potato mashers are most welcome a little earlier – as are those competent to ‘set the haggis alight’!). Give me a call on 01582 660135 if you would like to come.

If they still want to go she will get the tickets the following morning. Films start at 7.30 pm. We need to leave Dunstable about 6.30 pm to allow time for parking and to enjoy the elegant bar and interior. Price £8 or £6.50, age dependent.

Hostel Trip to the Glorious Gower Peninsular. A chance to visit the Gower peninsular in South Wales, not too far from Swansea. The Gower is both beautiful and unspoilt, there are many historic features located over an area that measures just sixteen miles by seven miles wide. Notably, Gower was one of the first places designated 'An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' under the Act of 1949. It has dozens of sandy beaches, both large and small. YHA Port Eynon Hostel was once a lifeboat station, and is in a beautiful position on an award-winning beach. "Now fully refurbished with upgrades throughout and additional en-suite bedrooms." The bay is also extremely popular for all watersports and there is storage for surfboards, canoes and other equipment at the property. With the Gower Coastal Path and cycle trails crossing this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its 34 miles of heritage coast there is plenty to do. for more information click here. This is now completely full. 6 members have signed up for the trip to Norway. Robin is proposing walking in 2 mountainous areas which are very approximately - 150 miles north of Oslo, Jotunheimen and Rondane. The intention is to organise the walking so that walks between cabins/hostels are not too strenuous. When we stay 2 nights at a cabin there will be a choice of walks the next day according to personal taste.
The trip will cost in the region of £1000 per person not including travel. This is based upon paying all meals provided and good standards of accommodation. It could be considerably cheaper when I have finalised the accommodation as there are different grades. I will try to mix the simple huts with the huts with more facilities.
Those members who have chosen to go on this trip are all fairly fit and so Robin has now reorganised the itinary accordingly. Although the trip is still open for late booking Robin will want to feel confident that any one coming along will be happy and able to match the stamina levels!

The intention is to accompany Paul Ridgeway on the last day of his 4 day walk around the Chiltern Way. Paul will have already set off first thing and we will arrange to meet him on route. In order to complete the walk in the time he will be walking at a brisk pace. Paul is likely to be walking about 25 miles today. Perhaps we should aim to accompany him for about 15.

This was very popular last year and we have been asked to do it again. If you are definitely coming please let Eila know so they have a rough idea of how many people they are providing refreshments for.The farm will also be advertising for members of the public to as attend as well this time.
The Shaw family, who have owned this arable farm since 1982, invite people to a conducted tour of their property, showing them what it means to be a conservation farm and giving an insight into modern farming and the flora, fauna, birds and beautiful wild flowers including orchids. They have been accepted into two significant environmental schemes: Natural England Entry and Higher Level Stewardship. They actively encourage and manage areas of chalk downland.
The farm has a couple of steep hills but the amazing views, especially as the sun sets, make the effort worthwhile. The family are more than willing to try to answer all questions and make the whole thing good, interesting, fun. No need to book, the more the merrier, bring friends, relations and anyone else who shows an interest. Whilst this event is free there will be a chance to donate towards the Macmillan Nurses. There will be a short introductory chat followed by the walk after which refreshments are provided.
The farm is off the A6 Streatley roundabout. Travelling from Luton go round the roundabout, turn right towards Lilley and the farm is on the left down a drive about a mile along that road – There will be signage. LU2 8ND roughly. If anyone needs a lift please contact Eila or Sue and we will try and organise something.

Resen Lodge, Bulgaria (near the old Bulgarian Capital Veliko Tarnovo)
Hostel trip
Leader Julian Clark-Lowes 07979435856
6 members are now booked on this trip. We are off to Bulgaria on a trip that will involve staying in one location only. This does make it suitable for a mixed range of abilities, it should be possible for people to organise a light day off if they want.
Our host Ronnie Cruickshank, from the ancient Bulgarian family the McCrukjzncs (Ok only joking he is actually a Scot) has arranged to pick us up from the airport and drop us off again. We will be based at his hostel at Resen near to the ancient capital of Bulgaria Veliko Tarnovo. The hostel offers free transport to and from the nearby city of Veliko Tarnovo; this looks like a wonderful walled mediaeval city. The accommodation, Resen Lodge, looks great to me. For what it is this could be a very cheap but different trip.
Ronnie has offered to help us sort out an itinerary once we are there. We can all participate in this but we don't all need to do the same thing every day. We should have a good mix of walking with a variety of landscapes, a bit of sight seeing and a bit of eating out. If you need a day off, the hostel has a pool and a bar.
At current prices the return airfare from Luton is £149.00 Beds at 10 to 15 euro, weather likely to be hotish. The exchange rate of £1=2.30 leva makes the menu at Resen Lodge look very cheap.
There are still places available at Resen, please Julian know if you are interested.
Walking along the River Vere & part of the Hertfordshire Way --which way decided on the day. Refreshments can be had at both the beginning & the end of the walk. But bring a drink for along the way. This would be classed as a easy to Medium Walk. Please note that Don is now leading this walk. All other details stay the same.
Meet time 9.15am for the 9.20 bus to St Albans. Bus Stop D at the Square.
Meeting at the Old Red Lion car park and walking around Houghton Regis. Discover how Houghton Regis has been shaped by the cement industry, from the Blue Water woods to the stark beauty of the quarry, long since abandoned, see how Mother Nature has reclaimed it, creating a unique ec-system that is home to 3 SI’s. Prepare to be amazed at this landscape; it is one of Houghton Regis most surprising secrets, unfortunately this maybe one of the last opportunities to visit the quarry as there is some future development planned. Anyone just wishing to`come for breakfast, we should be at the Weatherspoons' for about 10.30.
There is a short walk back to Houghton Regis of about a mile after breakfast unless non walkers are willing to offer lifts.

A select band of 4 Bogtrotters did this circular walk last winter in the ice and snow. Having long since thawed out we can show the route to you. I think that you will like it and hopefully, the bluebells will be out as well. We don’t actually go into Ashley Green proper; we go around it and start our walk from the top (southern end) of Berkhamsted on the Chesham road – near the cemetery. The anti-clockwise route takes us across fields, through woods, alongside hedgerows and short stretches of lane to Whelpley Hill. We will stop there for lunch, perhaps at the pub. The second half of the walk is equally pleasant, a bit undulating at times but nothing too strenuous. Bring refreshments as the pub may not serve snacks on a Sunday

Weekend away at Stow Youth Hostel. The idea is to stay two nights – some people may want to go down on the morning of the 11th and others may come down in the evening. Probably we will prepare a meal ourselves on the Friday night and eat in in the hostel. The Hostel sits in the main square at Stow and there are several quite decent pub restaurants in the immediate vicinity for an evening meal out on the Saturday. There are a variety of pubs and shops to be explored as well as the good walking in this area. Julian will be leading the walks so I am sure that we will be visiting a drinking establishment along the route. If you can’t make it down on Friday then we will have our mobiles with us. Come down and meet us Saturday if you wish. Currently the hostel has lots of spare spaces but this may fill up nearer the time.
Cost will be £18pppn. Therefore £36 for two nights.

This is a very special day. Some of the Boggies went last year and we spent the day tidying, pruning, clipping, sweeping, digging, raking and planting trees. It was a really enjoyable day on Studham Common which we soon found out was a lot larger than we realised. All this was done in between eating! We started with breakfast at the Memorial Hall on the green and elevenses while we were working. We enjoyed a delicious lunch back at the Memorial Hall before setting off again for our afternoon endeavours. It was all rounded off by tea and cakes before we returned home. You can volunteer to do as much or as little as you like, you do not have to commit to working all day. If you didn't come last year then do come this year - it is an event not to be missed! See you there.
Start with tea/coffee and a bacon roll. Discuss your ideas for today's walk; if linear confirm bus route and times for return to Dunstable. Aim for around 12 miles with a return time of about 4.30 pm.
With its extensive areas of heath, woodland and field our route today includes many elements that when all put together, can make for a most enjoyable walk. Fair weather on the day would be an added bonus. The trouble is, from past experience I know that’s its all too easy to lose ones bearings especially in woodland where signposts are a rarity and unmarked tracks are all too common. I’m still willing to lead though and you are welcome to join me.
This circular walk starts from the “Flying Fox” pub in Sheep Lane – just off the roundabout on the A5 between Hockliffe and Little Brickhill. Our lunch stop will be at Woburn.

The shortest walk of the year! We are going to visit this Nature Reserve at Tring where we will see their new visitors centre followed by a short introductory talk by one of the Wildlife Trust's staff who will explain how this former chalk quarry has been transformed into a home for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. This will be followed by a 2 mile stroll around the Reserve with plenty of time for refreshments in their cafe afterwards. An easy morning, a reward for all the miles walked in 2010
This undemanding and pleasant walk starts from beside the church at the village of Aldenham near to Watford in Herts. Car parking is available alongside the village green. We have walked the route in previous years but never in winter so it may be interesting to observe the seasonal difference - no prizes for noting the absence of bluebells! From the village we head north in the direction of Colney Street Bridge then veer westwards to join the banks of the River Colne at the spot where we have paddled in the past. After reaching Little Munden Farm we head northwards again eventually coming to a roadway which will take us to our lunch stop at Smug Oak. From there it`s into and across Bricket Wood Common (could be muddy). Rumour has it that the `Old Fox` pub on the far side of the Common has reopened. To close the circle we shall then head towards Otterspool then alongside the golf course back to our start point. Wise old hands will remember to play safe and bring a packed lunch - and carry a torch with you as well.

Resen Lodge, Resen Bulgaria (near the old Bulgarian Capital Veliko Tarnovo) POSTPONED
Hostel trip THIS IS NOW GOING TO BE IN SPRING/SUMMER 2011
Leader Julian Clark-Lowes 07979435856
This is likely to be a slightly challenging trip. We have done challenging trips before: Morocco and the High Atlas, The Faeroes, Iceland. Bulgaria is probably nothing like any of these. Nevertheless Bulgaria is definitely not going to be like a trip to a Mediterranean resort. That is why I want to go. I want to see rural Bulgaria before it is rebuilt in the image of Milton Keynes. If we don't go now we will miss it, but if we do go now we will have to accept it when some things are a bit rough and ready.
The hostel offers free transport to and from the nearby city of Veliko Tarnovo; this looks like a wonderful walled mediaeval city. Resen itself, not so sure. It looks like it was rebuilt by the communist party in the mid 50's but nevertheless somewhere quite unlike anywhere I have ever stayed before. The accommodation, Resen Lodge, looks great to me. For what it is this could be a very cheap but different trip.
At current prices the return airfare from Luton is £59. Beds at 10 to 15 euro, weather likely (no promise - I can send the links) to be warm but not hot. The exchange rate of £1=2.35 leva makes the menu at Resen Lodge look very cheap. Please Julian know if you are interested.
We take the bus to Sundon Park - Tesco Express and return to Dunstable via Keech Hospice, Upper Sundon, Fancott, Chalgrave, Wingfield and Sewell. Pubs and cafes along the way may not be open so bring refreshments.

The Ashridge Estate Boundary Trail is a 16 mile circular walk that goes round the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate, on the northern edge of the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. It was created in 1995 as part of the National Trust’s Centenary celebrations. It uses public rights of way and a few permissive paths to closely follow the edges of the estate. Much of the walk is through beautiful beech woods so typical of the Chilterns, with a few sections through fields for variety. The highlight of the walk is probably Ivinghoe Beacon, with its views over the Vale of Aylesbury and towards Dunstable Downs.

An opportunity to join friends and visit this excellent real ale pub that was recently awarded the CAMRA "Best Pub in South Bedfordshire" award. Sample its 13 real ales (but not all in one session!)
Meet time 8 pm Meet at The Globe Pub, 43 Winfield Street, Dunstable
We walk all the way and then enjoy late breakfast from the café at the Bridgewater Monument. I would very much like offers of help with transport for our return journey. For the past few years some fellow Boggies and supporters have forgone the opportunity of this beautiful walk and have instead driven to Ashridge at about 10.30 am and joined us for a hearty meal. Their vehicles provided us with our means of getting back to Dunstable. Alternatively those walking could leave their cars at the Yum Yum, accept a lift back there after our late breakfast and then return to Ashridge to collect some fellow walkers. Please bring refreshments for the walk - it is 10 miles before the café!
Swan's Way is slightly different to the other routes that we have walked as it is a long-distance bridleway rather than a long-distance footpath. It runs for approximately 65 miles, from Salcey Forest (just north of Milton Keynes), south through Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, to Goring-on-Thames. The route is covered by the OS Explorer Maps 207, 192, 181 and 171. Swan's Way can be walked in either direction (it is way-marked both ways). We will walk it going south and may include a hostel trip when we get down to Goring.
So we start the walk as all walks should be started and find the tea shop in the former medieval hunting ground of Salcey Forest. We then head round Salcey Lawn to the start of the Swan's Way and walk out into opencountryside, down to north Milton Keynes. En route we pass both a ruined church and a ruined farm before the gravel pits/nature reserve close to Great Linford. Please bring your own refreshments as, after the teashop, there are no pubs until the finish.

Hope you liked Olney the other week, because we’re going there again. This time I shall take us along footpaths which for the most part your leader has not walked before, so they will be new to me and perhaps to you as well. Our circular course does however include a section of the Milton Keynes Boundary Walk which I vaguely remember from a few years ago. Dickens Spinney, Hungary Hall, Kilwick Wood, Olney Park Farm and Olney Hyde are all spots on the map which are definitely new to me.
This circular walk follows the Chiltern Way towards Gaddesden Row, heads to Briden’s Camp, flirts with the outskirts of Redbourn to pick up the Hertfordshire Way and returns, not necessarily directly, to Flamstead. Starting from Leatherhead Football Club this 30 mile route should be completed within 10 hours to gain a personal certificate. The Bogtrotters have successfully competed for the shield many times but sadly 2010 will be the last Tanners Marathon. This is a hugely satisfying event which follows slightly different paths each year but is always a friendly affair with lots of support. Contact Chris as above or on 0781 666 9760 if you would like to join the elite and help us win the shield one last time. There is also a 20 mile challenge on the same day and some of us will be certain to take this on.
The cost of this event is £12-£20, which includes the entry fee, transport and refreshments but if you are planning on joining this marathon please contact Chris to express your interest and to obtain further details.
Meet time 7.15 am Meet at Priory Middle School, Dunstable
For those of you who have never heard of Chipperfield it’s south of Hemel Hempstead and a mile or so west of Kings Langley - a lovely part of rural Hertfordshire with a cricket ground, cosy pubs and on last looking, a tea shop. Starting from a point beside or close to the church we will cross the Common and join the Hertfordshire Way path taking an anticlockwise route to the outskirts of Kings Langley and Scatterdells Wood. To close the circle we shall then head westwards taking in various farms before re-joining the Hertfordshire Way at a point close to Flaunden at the appropriately named Woodman’s Wood.
After your walk and if the weather is favourable and your driver is willing, then why not extend your visit with lunch at the village pub or a picnic on the green.
Meet time 9 am
Meet at Priory Middle School , Dunstable
This circular walk around Caldecott Lake, which is mostly on tarmac paths, should be easy and leisurely
and walking boots will not be necessary. We will end with a meal at the Caldecott Arms pub, where 2
meals can be purchased for £10: http://www.pub-explorer.com/bucks/pub/caldecottearms.htm.
Caldecott Lake was built in 1982 as a balancing lake - designed to prevent the River Ouzel from flooding
the southern part of Milton Keynes. It is an excellent habitat for wildlife. Its birdlife is particularly rich as
boats are excluded from some areas and this creates sanctuaries for large flocks of water birds. These
can be seen from two hides on the south lake, one at the end of the point near the business park and one
further round on the south shore.
For those not wishing to walk but who would like to meet for the meal we should be dining at about 7.30 pm - unless I manage to get us lost!
If possible contact Joanne in advance as she may be able to reserve an area in the restaurant for our group. Lifts can be arranged from Dunstable.
Meet time 5 pm at French’s Avenue, Dunstable or 5.30 pm at Caldecott Arms car park
Whilst this event is free it is organised for the benefit of our local Keech Hospice, where all donations will be sent. There will be a short introductory chat followed by the walk after which refreshments are provided.
The farm is off the A6 Streatley roundabout. Travelling from Luton go round the roundabout, turn right towards Lilley and the farm is on the left down a drive about a mile along that road – LU2 8ND roughly. If anyone needs a lift please contact Eila or Sue and we will try and organise something.
Princess Risborough -Wendover - Ivinghoe Beacon. Walk along one of the oldest "roads" in Europe through splendid countryside. At the same time you will be raising money for a worthy charity, the Disabled Ramblers, a group to which the Boggies have previously donated funds. It is hoped that the monies raised by getting your friends and family to sponsor you will be equally matched by Bucks CC and utilised in the Chilterns Hills by replacing difficult stiles with more user friendly gates that allow greater access to all.
Spectacular ridge walking with fine views combined with some woodland paths, including going past Chequers between the Princes Risborough and Wendover section. Join us for either the whole day or at lunch-time for the second (11 mile) section from Wendover to Ivinghoe Beacon, where we hope to finish by approx 6 pm.
In order to successfully offer the option of a half day or full day walk we will need a volunteer – or more – to meet the 11 milers in the afternoon at the Yum Yum, organise the transport and lead the convoy to our meet point in Wendover. This volunteer/s would then take their car to Ivinghoe Beacon and shuffle the half day walkers back to their cars at the end of the day. Please contact Paul if you are able to help.
Please join us for what has become a tradition and is supporting a good cause.
Sponsorship forms are attached to the back of this programme or can be downloaded.

This short day walk starts via the riverside paths from North and South Bridge Streets, going out of Shefford towards Clifton. It is an attractive, easy, flat route with no stiles and is based on the River Ivel Navigation Channel which was built between Biggleswade and Shefford in 1823. The waters of the Rivers Hit and Flit are very clean so birds, fish, insects, crayfish and flowers should be seen along the walk and even (if we are very lucky) kingfishers and otters. There is a nice pub called the Green Man where we can enjoy a drink in the garden.
If you came to “The Big Bash” at Studham in January then you will know what a great day we had. This time we will be working for just half a day and then we all finish our endeavours with an excellent lunch provided by the Friends of Studham Common. Our work will probably include scrub clearance, clearing footpaths and restoring hedgerows. All equipment is provided, you just need to bring yourself, gloves and “gardening clothes”.
Please could you let me know whether you will be coming by June 11th as numbers will be needed for organising lunch and equipment.

This friendly bunkhouse offers comfortable accommodation in one of the oldest pubs in Wiltshire. Set in the village of Clyffe Pypard, in a conservation area close to the Ridgeway, it's ideally situated for walkers and cyclists wanting to explore the area while also offering easy access to the M4 just 5 miles away. Also close by is the Avebury site. YHA Clyffe Pypard is a member of CAMRA (and offers home cooked food, excellent self-catering facilities and small shop for all your essentials). Showers are metered (50p) and duvets can be hired for £1.50 – or bring your own.
Currently the whole of this bunkhouse is reserved for our group – 14 beds for a total of £177 for the Saturday night - £13 per person if we take full occupancy. There is also the possibility of extending your trip by arriving on Friday or leaving on Monday but you would have to confirm this directly with Clyffe Pypard and organise your own transport. If further details are required please contact Eila asap
A circular walk starting and finishing at the “Live and Let Live”, Pegsdon. Most of this walk forms part of the Chiltern Way Extension. We will head out along the CWE towards Little Offley past fine views of Deacon Hill and panoramic views of Knocking Hoe before circling around and, after a short section on ordinary footpaths, rejoin the CWE and return to Pegsdon where refreshments seem probable. Those coming direct should be ready at Pegsdon (near Live and Let Live) by 7.40 pm. We will be there by then or very soon after.
This circular walk follows the Chiltern Way for about 5 miles. Starting in the village of Studley Green we head to Bennett End, then Radnage, across to Piddington and back to Studley Green. Unfortunately the only refreshment stops are at the beginning and three quarters of the way round so please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink. This is a moderate walk in undulating countryside. Ample compensation for any hills is provided by the quiet beauty of the area’s outstanding views and, of course, the red kites.
Meet time 9.30 am Meet at Priory Middle School, Dunstable

This 5 mile circular starts at Streatley, goes over Sharpenhoe Clappers, down into Sharpenhoe, bearing off towards Harlington and back to the Chequers at Streatley for a refreshment stop before home. A walk in which new and prospective members are invited to come along and meet the rest of us. Don’t be shy, if you’ve always meant to join but haven’t got round to it then this is the one for you. I’ve made the start time slightly later than usual so that those who don’t like getting up early on Sundays can work their way into it gradually.
We venture a little further afield than usual to Thriplow, just over the Hertfordshire border, in Cambridgeshire, on a circular walk that follows good paths (but includes some road walking). There are good views from three hills and the walk includes several interesting/unusual war memorials as well as three pubs en route.
From the canal basin at Little Venice the walk proceeds beside an attractive stretch of the Regent’s Canal to Regent’s Park. This is followed by a circuit of this superb area, including a visit to the ornamental Queen Mary’s Gardens. A short detour to the summit of Primrose Hill provides a grand panoramic view over London. There will be cafes and pubs on our route but please also bring a packed lunch. Currently the cost of the train to London is half price if 4 or more people travel together. Please contact Sylvia nearer the time for up-to-date prices.
Meet time 9.30 am Meet at Luton Station (not Parkway)
The western fells are less frequented by us and by the tourist hordes but offer some superb walking and excellent hostels. We plan to stop at different hostels – Eskdale, Wastwater, Ennerdale and perhaps even the iconic Black Sail. Book early as the Lakes hostels are very popular at this time of the year.
Bring your picnic blanket and some finger food to share. Tea and coffee will be available. Bring something stronger if you want. Chews house Room 1 at 7.30.
Let Ruth know if you are coming so that we don't all bring sausage rolls!
Saxon, Norman and Perpendicular. A circular walk starting at Wing where we can view the Saxon church, on to Stewkley with its fine Norman tower, over to Cublington where there are supposed to be some nice perpendicular windows. This is the area which was once going to be the third London airport. Cublington was going to be under the runway. This is the day after the clocks go forward and so to be kind we will start at 10 am. If it starts to get dark early we may shorten the walk a bit. Some decent pubs along the way but bring some lunch anyway - we might need to push on.
Starting from Treasures Grove car park on the minor road between Streatley and Lilley (where the Icknield Way and John Bunyan Trail meet, not far from Telegraph Hill) we follow a little of the Icknield Way and the John Bunyan Trail round towards Lilley. Here we hope to stop at the Lilley Arms before returning through Kingshill Plantation back to the start. This is a fairly easy walk with only one stile but at least one fairly steep hill. However there should be some good views of the valley, villages and Bedfordshire's Chiltern AONB.

An opportunity to meet prospective members and enjoy a glass of wine and some nibbles as well as photographs, slides etc of the past year’s activities.
We drive to Hemel Hempstead (Gadebridge) and leave our vehicles beneath the trees at the freebie open-air car park ….. It’s where the Park and Ride buses start from on the A4146. We shall then wend our way on foot, through Gadebridge Park and Hemel old town, before joining the Nicky Line, proceeding as far as the village of Redbourn – most probably for an early lunch stop. From past experience the next part of the walk towards Stags End may be muddy in places so be warned! Whatever the state of the path, be cheered by the prospect of a hot cuppa to come as it is intended that we should next head for Piccotts End and the Garden Centre tea shop. From there it’s but a short hop back to our cars.
Another linear meander from Fenny Stratford through Bow Brickhill, across Woburn Golf Course and woods, through Battlesden and Potsgrove to Hockliffe, from where we will either bus or walk home. Bring lunch. Hockliffe will be the only pub!

The independent Wetherdown Hostel is part of a Sustainability Centre which promotes environmental awareness and low impact living. It is on top of the South Downs and is an award-winning example of an eco-renovation and a comfortable place to stay. If the weather is bad Winchester is about an hours drive away. For a group of 8 or more the overnight B&B cost will be £19.50 pp. Less than 8 will be £22 pp B&B.
This morning’s circular route starts outside Stockgrove Country Park and uses some paths well known to us: the Cross Bucks Way and the Greensand Ridge Walk, taking us to the village of Soulbury. An early morning walk in February? Of course! And why would you want to? Because the log cabin at the end provides hot sausage sandwiches and steaming tea and so much more. And you will be home in time for lunch, feeling very smug. Bring a snack and a drink for the halfway point + a torch.
Meet time 6.30 am

Why not come and enjoy an evening of fun and frolics at Aquasplash at Hemel Hempstead. Not a lot of swimming involved. There will be waterslides, flumes, rapids and lots more! This will be a first for the group. We will meet at Priory Middle School to sort out lifts to Hemel. The session finishes at 9 pm so it would be good to get down there for 7 pm approx so we have lots of time to enjoy ourselves.

Meet time 7.30 pm Meet at Ruchi, 80 Woodside Road, Lower Woodside, Nr Caddington, LU1 4DQ.
We have been asked to check the Galley and Warden Hills Walking Leaflet before it is reprinted in march. This involves walking the Streatley Fields Walk (4 miles), the Galley Hill Walk (2 miles) and the Warden Hill Walk (1.75 miles). Some of these paths double up and so total mileage should be about 6 miles. If you have never walked these paths you are particularly welcome, because we can give you the leaflet and watch to see whether you get lost!
Here is the leaflet - its the printers proof so some of it is upside down...
PLEASE NOTE THE START TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM 9.15am to 10.15am
This continues a walk led by Roger in October of last year and follows the Nicky Line from Redbourn into Hemel Hempstead. We will start with refreshments in Redbourn and finish, similarly, in Hemel whilst waiting for our transport back to Dunstable.
Meet time 10.15 am for 10.20 bus to St. Albans Meet at Bus Stop D, The Square, Dunstable
Please come along with your suggestions for the May to August 2010 Programme. This is your chance to put your ideas forward. Even if you do not wish to lead a walk or hostel trip, or become involved in the club’s social activities, your input is always welcome.
This circular walk starts from the pretty hamlet of Milton Bryan (the birth place of Joseph Paxton who designed the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition in 1851). We will park near the pond, admire the ducks and read all about the old Methodist Church, whose feet used to rest in the water.
This is a first for the group. The hostel is modern and purpose-built, set on the edge of Sherwood Forest and offers a high standard of en-suite family accommodation. We have managed to secure some 2 bedded and 4 bedded rooms. So if you are interested in this trip please contact Sue Jenkins in order to book the accommodation you would like.
Travel arrangements will be decided nearer the time.
Bookings required by 20th November please Approx cost £16
Starting in Ledburn this walk takes us to Mentmore and Slapton where we hope The Carpenter’s Arms will still be able to provide refreshments. However, as so many of our public houses are closing or ceasing to prepare food, please bring with you a packed lunch and something to drink.
Another chance to view our digital images of recent events on my new projector. Last time I did most of the talking, this time we’ll start with your images. So get a gallery together, photos or videos, onto a memory stick, USB drive or whatever and come along.
Once again we will be walking to The Plough at Wingfield, hopefully repeating last year’s coffee stop at the church in Houghton Regis. If you wish to book a meal please speak to Sheila (on Dennis’s mobile, evenings and weekends) regarding the menu and prices.
A bit of a first for us. We are off to the “2009 ‘Big Bash’ Work Party” at Studham. This usually involves a hot breakfast in the Village Hall followed by some practical work on the Common, then back to the village hall for a lunch followed by some more practical work to finish off the day. They tell us that they always have a great time with a good turn out of people. All tools are provided. You can see details of last year’s event at their website www.foscomm.org/.
Please let me know if you are planning to come so that I can let them know & they can organise catering. Please ring Julian for details of where to meet, at what time & we will organise transport.
Note that on this day we will be working as volunteers for and under the direction of the Friends of Studham Common. Be aware that our group insurance does not cover us for this activity.
A linear walk – some “new” paths from Harlington to Harlington Wood End, then north to meet the John Bunyan Trail to Steppingley and on to Ampthill, through Ampthill Park, to get the bus home.
Meet time 9.30 am Meet at bus stop D, High St North, Dunstable (Toddington/Bedford bus)
This great walk starts in Old Amersham, goes through Coleshill, Winchmore Hill, Penn Street and Little Missenden to end back at Old Amersham, where there are tea shops. There is a steep hill to start with but then the walking is reasonably easy, however be prepared for a lot of mud! There are plenty of pubs where we will be able to get lunch or drinks. The walk starts from Old Amersham car park (off Broadway) at about 10.15 am.
This short winter walk will follow the Wendover Arm of the canal back to Marsworth Lock, finishing off in one of the 2 pubs whilst waiting for our return transport to Dunstable. If time permits we can stroll around the reservoir checking out the winter wild life. The only refreshment stop is at the end so please bring a flask and a snack, if needed.
Meet time 9.50 am to catch 10.02 to Aylesbury Meet at Bus Stop F, West St., Dunstable
In December we did not finish part 4 of this Trail so today we will catch up by walking from Pavenham into Bedford. This route may be circular or linear and will be a short day walk – longer than a half day, but NOT a short walk.
Join us for our annual Fish and Chip Supper and Awards Evening (vegetarian option available). If you are going to attend please could you let us know in advance by emailing enquiries@dunstablebogtrotters.co.uk or ringing 01582 896215. We will get back to you to organise your food order. Please book well in advance. However, we will be able to take a few orders on the night, so no problem if you just want to turn up then.
Our speaker this year will be Harold Avis, formerly the Estate Manager at Woburn Abbey.
The nominations are your opportunity to reflect on the high and low points of the previous year’s walking and present the worthy and the perpetrators with an appropriate award.
Today’s short walk starts from the car park at Wyevale Garden Centre, Pipers Hill, Great Gaddesden – just off the A4146 between Dagnall and Hemel Hempstead. Our route takes in water meadows, an attractive 19th century bridge over the River Gade, deciduous woodlands, a children’s farm, Buddhist Temple, 12th century church, one village and 2 hamlets!
This is the one the titans turn out for!Bogtrotters who never walk throughout the year mass for this annual epic. The destination is to be Shropshire, 2 nights at Bridges Hostel and then two nights at Church Stretton Bunkhouse. This really is a very popular time to get away and Don will have to make our booking promptly. Please contact him if you are keen to learn more.

If you wish to come will you please let Eila know as soon as possible and give her a £5 deposit each before the end of November.
It looks like tonight, (friday) is going to be pretty cold and the roads over to MK may be fairly treacherous in the morning and so the plan is to meet at Priory School but to walk out for a half day from there. Plan to be agreed with whoever turns up.
The start point for this circular walk is the car park beside the “Windmill” on the A4146 at Caldecotte Lake, Milton Keynes. Our outward bound route follows the course of the River Ouzel downstream as far as and around Willen Lake – past the bird sanctuary and Peace Pagoda. There will be a lunch stop at Woolstone village – the “Barge Inn”. The return leg will take in some of the quieter parts of MK. Guaranteed no hills!
A short “day walk” which will finish with mince pies and ginger wine at Don’s. This convivial gathering is an annual Bogtrotters’ event to herald the festive season and should not be missed.
Bromham to Bedford. We walk out of Bromham towards the Great River Ouse, which we follow at various points today. We finish at Bedford town centre to do some Christmas shopping.
This popular slide show will include views of hostel trips undertaken by the group as well as walks enjoyed closer to home. Come and remind yourself why you’re a Bogtrotter!
It would be appreciated if those attending contribute £1 towards the cost of the hall.
We tried this last year and it proved very successful. The idea is that anyone wishing to join us should bring a contribution of food. This does not have to be home made. If you wish to eat with friends but have no time or desire to prepare a dish then please just buy something and bring that along. This event has to be limited to 14 people. Please contact Wendy to book a place and to offer a sweet or savoury dish.
Meet time 7.30 pm
Meet at 44 Borough Road, Dunstable
This local walk allows us time to enjoy a tea stop on the Downs before returning to Dunstable town via a path between the golf course and the quarry. It is advisable to bring a torch.
This gentle walk starts at Flitwick Mill and initially follows the river Flit. Several information boards are provided along the route to makes sure we don’t miss any of the wildlife and history that this circular ramble offers. There are public houses close to our start/finish point for those who need to quench their thirst but please bring sandwiches for lunchtime.
An extended Chalgrave circular walk. We will reverse the published route to enable us to seek thespian refreshments and possibly a piano performance at Tebworth.
“… possibly Britain’s most beautiful cinema …” (BBC). If you would like to decide for yourself please ring Wendy to register your interest and leave her a contact telephone number. When The Rex release their programme for November (probably in the middle of October) she will have a matter of hours to confirm with you that you wish to see the film they are offering. These start at 7.30 pm. We will need to leave Dunstable at 6.30 pm to allow time for parking and to enjoy the elegant bar and interior. Tickets cost £8 or £6.50, age dependent!
Ridgmont to Bromham. After heading out of Ridgmont we cross the M1, walk up to Cranfield and on to Hall End, Wood End and Green End, before finishing at Bromham.
The “Boggies” are staying at MK YH this weekend and walking both days. If anyone would like to join us for this Day Walk then they are most welcome. This will be a circular walk from the Youth Hostel at Bradwell, taking in the Grand Union Canal and also Willen Lake.
Come and see the delights of Milton Keynes. This is MK as you have never seen it before. View the concrete cows. Walk along the Grand Union Canal. See the aqueduct. Delight in the hidden disused railway line. This is all just on our doorstep and you will not believe that these little villages are just a stone’s throw from Central Milton Keynes. If members want to come and spend the day Christmas shopping at Central MK then that is fine. We can all meet up for a meal in the evening. I personally will be walking and enjoying the countryside.
If anyone would like to come and join the walking but does not want to stay in the Youth Hostel then that can be arranged as well. I am open to any combination of the above choices.
This weekend would be a good introduction to hostelling for any new members who are curious but only want to try one night at a time!
If you would like to be included in this weekend away then please contact Sue as soon as possible.
Enjoy a steak or gammon etc with all the trimmings for £5.99 and this includes an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink from a wide selection. (Note that parking is free at the adjacent Asda car park after 6 pm.) More details from: http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/ food-and-drink/ food/wetherspoon-clubs/grill-night.php
Meet time 8 pm
Meet at “The Gary Cooper” Wetherspoons, Court Drive, Dunstable (adjacent to Grove Theatre)
Please come along with your suggestions for the January to April 2010 Programme. This is your chance to put your ideas forward. Even if you do not wish to lead a walk or hostel trip, or become involved in the club’s social activities, your input is always welcome.
This circular walk starts in the village of Studley Green, heads to Bennett End, Radnage, across to Piddington and back to Studley Green.
Travel by budget flights (red-eye times!) but accommodation in small hostel type hotels recommended to us by a member of the group. Food will be “eating out” and half-board.
Every effort will be made to keep costs down but the final price was unavailable at the time of going to print.
Steppingley to Ridgmont. Our route heads out of Steppingley towards Flitwick and then on to Ampthill, skirting the Millbrook test circuit before finishing at Ridgmont.
An interesting route, as yet unwalked by us, along the partially constructed but unsurfaced cycle track from Luton to Harpenden. The length is uncertain but interest is guaranteed. When we have walked sufficiently we will bus back to Luton and Dunstable.
Meet at 9.30 am
Meet at the Winston Churchill PH, Church St, Dunstable
This is your opportunity to air your views and elect a new committee for the coming year, so please make every effort to attend. If you have an item that you want included for discussion please inform a committee member by Monday, 28th September 2009.
Meet time 8 pm
Meet at the barn of the Victoria PH, West Street, Dunstable
On May Bank Holiday the group ventured over to Ireland for a week. Come and see the photos, hear about the ancient burial mounds, see the Giant’s Causeway and, of course, we had to venture up and into the Mountains of Mourne!
There will also be photos of events held during the summer. Julian will be trying out his new computer projector so please bring any digital photos you would like to share, either on SD cards or memory sticks.
It would be appreciated if those attending contribute £1 towards the cost of the hall.
We are going to explore the countryside around Stratford-upon-Avon. The hostel is not in the town so we can follow the river into Stratford on Saturday and then have a look at the villages on Sunday.
Approx cost £22.95 pppn B & B
If you are interested in this trip contact Sue Jenkins 01582 865966
This circular walk starts in Studham and takes in Little Gaddesden and Dagnall before returning to Studham – a repeat of our earlier “bluebell walk” minus the bluebells but still a pretty route to be savoured. Not suitable for dogs.
An autumn “opener” for the meander season. We shall bus to Hockcliffe, walk to Toddington (for coffee), lunch at Chalton and meander back to Dunstable.
Meet time 9.35 am (prompt)
Meet at bus stop D, High St. North, Dunstable
Contact Julian or Sue on 01582 865966 or 07979 435856
on the day.

An opportunity to meet prospective members and enjoy a glass of wine and some nibbles as well as photographs, slides etc of the past year’s activities.
Discover the delights of a walk along part of the River Colne, the Munden Estate and Wall Hall before reaching the end point and relaxing in the pub. We start at Aldenham, which appears in the Domesday Book as Eldeham. There should be time to investigate Bricketwood Common, which is a site of Special Scientific Interest. Please be aware that parts of this walk could be distinctly muddy, so gaiters are recommended if the weather has been wet! You may like to bring some sandwiches with you as an alternative to pub food.
Sundon Hills Country Park to Steppingley. The walk today heads for Sharpenhoe Clappers, then on to Harlington, Westoning and hence to Steppingley, taking us through some lovely countryside.
This is a coffee walk. A short stroll of just over 4 miles starting at Little Gaddesden church, crossing the Ashridge golf course to The Ride and on to enjoy coffee at the Bridgewater Monument. Then back through the woods to the church.
This hostel was purpose built in 1995 with excellent facilities and is located not far from the historic centre of the city, close to the canal and very close to some excellent (al fresco) and reasonably priced restaurants and fine industrial and art museums, which I can personally recommend. Breakfast will be included in the price (around £24 per night) and premium rooms may be available. I propose to travel up by train, so as to secure the best advance deals (since Manchester and cars do not mix) and the hostel is close to the station. It is likely that a canal walk will be on the itinerary plus plenty of time to potter around and even shop should you want to! Please let me know if you are thinking of going so I can start to make plans, since rooms will be booked up early for the bank holiday weekend.
We walk all the way and then enjoy breakfast from the café at the Bridgewater Monument. I would very much like offers of help with transport for our return journey. Last year a few people who did not want to leave their beds in time for the walk instead drove to Ashridge at about 10.30 am and joined us for a hearty meal. Their vehicles provided us with our means of getting back to Dunstable. An alternative is to walk a further 4.75 miles to Studham and catch a bus back from there. If you want to do the extra miles please let me know so that I can check on the bus timetable.
Three volunteer drivers have offered to meet us at the Ashridge Monument after our walk, they will join us for breakfast and then take some of us back to Dunstable. Probably we will need one or two walkers with cars to return to Ashridge to help collect the remaining Bogtrotters. If you are willing to help with this rescue please leave your car at the Yum Yum car park.
This is going to be a day out in Salcey Forest. We will start with the “Elephant Walk”, a board walk up into the tree tops, which offers easy walking and is accessible to wheelchairs/pushchairs etc. We then have a choice of going off on more walks into the forest – some short and others longer. If members only want to stay for half a day then, providing they have brought their own transport, this will be fine. There is a café in the forest which is available for drinks and snacks. I suggest we have a picnic before we set off for our afternoon endeavours.
Don has arranged a short walk near Sewell with the objective of doing a bit of path clearance on the way. Meet at 2 Chiltern Road 1.30 Thursday 6th August. Bring Gloves and Secateurs.
This wooded walk starts at Woburn, passes though the woodlands of Aspley Heath and takes the Greensand Ridge track back to our start. This is one not to be missed!
Once again an opportunity to gather at the top of the Downs as the sun goes down, with the potential for some glorious views over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and beyond. Bring your kites or your frisbees and some snacks to be shared out.
Please let John know by Sunday 26th July if you intend coming so that food provision can be co-ordinated.
Meet time 7.30 pm
Meet at the top of Dunstable Downs at the wooden picnic tables in front of the entrance to the Visitor Centre, from where we will be walking towards the site of the old café.
We will walk from the Links car park at the bottom of Warden Hills, around Galley Hill and along the top of Warden Hill where there are some excellent views. This route lies within the Chilterns’ Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is an important site of chalk downland. Crossing the A6 (avoiding the cars!) we return via Streatley with probably a quick detour to the pub, especially if the weather is hot. Our path then turns towards the Pasque, crosses the same road further along and follows a track at the bottom of the golf course.
The Watling Chase Timberland Trail passes through the most varied and beautiful landscapes between Borehamwood to the South and St Albans and Hatfield to the North. We start off from Elstree and Borehamwood Station and head northwards towards Shenley. There will be a pub stop for lunch at London Colney. Following this we walk past the site of the medieval manor of Tyttenhanger and the lakes formed by gravel extraction to the end point, where we may take refuge in the thatched late 17th century Plough public house at Sleapshyde.
This annual Bogtrotters’ event will take place in Sue’s garden at 74 Leafields, Houghton Regis (weather permitting). If wet in the kitchen!
• Approximate cost £3.50
• 7.30 pm ‘til late
• tea/coffee/orange will be provided but please bring a bottle if that is your preference
• please bring a garden chair
• phone Sue on 01582 865966 to book a place by 10th July.
An easy circular walk this – starting from the Yum Yum and skirting along the bottom of the Downs before crossing (take care) the busy road beside the entrance to the Gliding Club at Well Head. We then walk towards Doolittle Mill, then Totternhoe and return to Dunstable via Green Lanes having worked-up an appetite for Sunday lunch.
This annual trip into the Surrey countryside uses private transport to the start point at Leatherhead Football Club. The 30 mile route, which should be completed within 10 hours to gain a personal certificate, changes each year but is always a friendly affair with lots of support. Last year members of the Bogtrotters once again won the Team Trophy, so if you would like to help us retain the shield contact Chris on 01582 866305 or 0781 666 9760. There is also a 20 mile challenge if 30 is a step too far.
The approximate cost of this event is £12-£20, which includes the entry fee, transport and refreshments but if you are planning on joining this marathon please contact Chris to advise him of your interest and to obtain further details. Sadly 2010 will be the last time this hugely satisfying challenge will take place – so you cannot put off your participation for too long
A walk starting with (hopefully) coffee and a bun in Abbots Langley. From the village our clockwise circular route takes us out across fields, over the M25 and down to the canal close to Kings Langley. Towpath lovers will enjoy the stroll towards Nash Mills. We then make tracks uphill towards Pimlico and the “White Hart” at Bedmond for a timely stop. From there we re-cross the M25 and back via fields and lanes to our start point.
If you plan to join the Tanners Marathon on Sunday then you may like to arrive really early by staying in this camping barn near Guildford. Listed as “a sustainable camping barn set amidst beautiful countryside” there is a possibility that accommodation may be available for Friday and Saturday nights. Anyone wanting to spend Sunday night in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty could be booked into Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel.
The long hours of daylight in June provide us with the opportunity to undertake an evening walk to the Farmer’s Boy at Kensworth, last visited by the group in February, in the snow. The ale and pork scratchings were excellent and we hope for more of the same. Please bring a torch.
We regret that this walk is not appropriate for those who wish to bring along their dogs.
Tring reservoirs provide a level walk with plenty of wild life to be seen. This is one of the top bird watching areas in the region. There may be some surprises in store!
Last of the Oxbridge Walks will finish, with an 11 mile walk from Arrington to Cambridge, then stay overnight in the hostel. And on Sunday we explore Cambridge till mid afternoon before heading home.
Price £21.95 b&b per person per night.
Meet time 9-00
Meet at Priory Middle School
Cut off date for booking 21st April
Distance 11 miles
This walk along the Ridgeway, in support of the Elenyyd Hostels in Wales, follows our traditional Princes Risborough to Ivinghoe Beacon route. This stretch of the Ridgeway is superb and with each step you can help keep these small and beautiful hostels open – so please find some sponsors for your strides! A form can be found at the back of this programme.
A preparatory stroll for our sponsored walk on Sunday! This is a gentle walk from Piccotts End (near Hemel Hempstead) through Frithsden to pick up the bus back at Hudnall.
Please come along with your suggestions for the September to December 2009 Programme. This is your chance to put your ideas forward. Even if you do not wish to lead a walk or hostel trip, or become involved in the club’s social activities, your input is always welcome.
This Hertfordshire circular walk starts in Gustard Wood and takes us to Ayot St. Lawrence and Codicote and then to the tea rooms at Knebworth House. There are pubs in all these villages. The return route is back through Codicote before reaching Gustard Common and the car park.
Our trip to the Yorkshire Dales over Easter is sure to feature amongst Don’s slides together with some from closer to home. Come and remember how good it all was and how pretty the snow looked! A contribution of £1 from those attending towards the cost of the hall would be appreciated.
Today we will drive to this parish in the Aylesbury Vale where we might pop into the village tea rooms, featured on the “Teapot Trail”. Starting from here on the Winslow Road junction with Smithfield End, the walk passes the “House School”, crosses countryside towards Stewkley and then round to Drayton Parslow. The Three Horseshoes is our scheduled stop for sandwiches, hot food and/or a drink (real ale available). The return route via Mursley and through Church Hill Farm passes the trout fishing lakes, The Swan (once a public house) and back to our cars at The Betsey Wynne pub on the B4032 Mursley Road – more real ales!
A circular walk to Totternhoe and back along the old railway track to Dunstable North, passing The Globe on our return? Suppose it can’t be helped then!
The idea of this trip is to provide a core of activities organised about a series of 3 bases with various key dates and locations. Members may wish to join or leave the party at any of these keys. These dates and times are still subject to revision.
The first key is Holyhead on the 23rd of May. It is likely that a car will drive directly to Holyhead from Dunstable on that day. The idea is to take the ferry to Dublin and then drive north to Drogheda to arrive late on the night of the 23rd at Drogheda YH.
The following day is essentially a sightseeing event. The ancient burial ground at New Grange is one of the finest European passage-tombs and a world heritage site. I have always wanted to go there.
We will stay the second night (24th) at Drogheda.
Drogheda is only a short distance north of Dublin airport. Possibly members may choose to join us on the first or second of these nights.
After Drogheda we will drive north crossing Carlingford Lough into Northern Ireland.
The intention would be to stay for 3 nights (25th, 26th, 27th) exploring the Mountains of Mourne probably based at Newcastle YH but maybe elsewhere. Members could join us if they wished by flying to Belfast.
After this we would drive to the North Coast. There are two YHA hostels which we might visit and they are within walking distance of each other. This is the coast of the Giants Causeway, Bushmills Distillery, Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge and Dunluce Castle. We would stay in this area for the nights of the 28th, 29th and 30th.
After this we would head for Belfast and the ferry to Stranraer.
Those who wish to head straight for home might do so. Perhaps a break on the night of the 31st at one of the Grasmere YHs would be a pleasant way to ease the journey home.
Parking close to Willington’s beautiful 16C dovecote and stables we walk a short distance through the village and along a cycleway to follow a footpath leading to the River Great Ouse and the bridge into Great Barford. More easy walking following the curves of the river brings us to Roxton Lock and Tempsford for lunch. The Wheatsheaf public house is one choice or picnic tables at the site of Gannock Castle (circa 921AD) provide a different interest. After lunch our route turns south to the outskirts of Blunham, across open fields and back to Great Barford and the river. We return to Willington by a different path passing on the way Danish Camp, an English Heritage Scheduled Monument, which conveniently serves light refreshments.
Starting at Hockliffe this is an energetic walk (because of the distance) along footpaths and deserted lanes through Battlesden, Potsgrove and Woburn Woods into Little Brickhill.
Meet time 9.35 am
Meet at bus stop, High Street North
Gamlingay to Arrington (Wimpole Hall). We head off toward Cockayne Hatley , Croydon and to the finishing at Arrington. Hopefully there will be time to explore Wimpole Hall and the grounds.
This circular walk starts in Studham and goes to Little Gaddesden and Dagnall before returning to Studham. We will enjoy lovely meadows and some wooded areas, savouring the delights of the Gade Valley.
Camping Barn at Alstonefield in the Peak District. ‘Stone tents’ provide basic accommodation for walkers and cyclists. The walking in the area is first class. Early booking is required for a popular holiday period.
This mystery walk will be dependant on the weather, who turns up and the phase of the moon. If the weather is exceptionally inclement it will probably involve going to one of our favourite local pubs and no further! However a torch is suggested and we hope to be back by 10.30.
Woburn to Husborne Crawley – clockwise. Apart from one or two minor inconveniences such as an almost impassable stream in full spate and a section of closed footpath (we ignored the signs), the first half of 7P went off quite well - so let’s complete the final section today. We can start with coffee at Woburn before heading out towards Aspley Heath, Woburn Sands and Aspley Guise. The finish will be at the “White Horse” pub just like last time. I think that today’s walk qualifies as a half day by reason of the low mileage.
An opportunity to meet prospective members and enjoy a glass of wine and some nibbles as well as photographs, slides etc of the past year's activities. This will be followed by a new members' introductory walk, approximately two weeks later and possibly a weekend visit to our local Youth Hostel in Bradwell, Milton Keynes, if there is sufficient interest.
After parking in Tring we will proceed by walking diagonally across the park to pick up the Ridgeway Path and follow this to Wendover for lunch. For the return journey we will be following a seldom walked footpath ascending through woodland to Aston Hill then dropping down to Tring via green lanes and field footpaths. This is a classic Chilterns area walk with attractive woodlands, big skies and superb views.
This is a walking and hostelling trip to the Yorkshire Dales, hopefully using the Youth Hostels at Malham, Kettlewell, Bishopdale and Hawes. Luggage transportation will be available if required. Early booking required for this.
Starting in Studham our circular route goes through Great Bradwin’s Wood, passing Ballingdon Bottom and Hedgeswood Common. We continue on towards Great Gaddesden for lunch before turning west to Hudnall Corner, where we may stop for tea. We then head north to the edge of Ravensdell Wood before returning to Studham
The idea here is to bring something sweet or savoury, bought or home-baked. You may wish to let me know in advance if you intend to come and what you will bring so some co-ordination can take place, but this is not essential. Tea and coffee will be provided. Should you want anything stronger, please feel free to bring something of your choice!
Meet time 8pm Meet at 5 Periwinkle Terrace, Dunstable
A circular walk around the Chess Valley, going through Latimer village, Chenies and stopping at Sarratt for lunch. Lots of local history and beautiful views, some hills but not too steep. This walk starts from Westwood Park car park, off Chenies Avenue, Little Chalfont, HP6 6PR at 10.30 am, returning to the car park at approx 4 pm.
The programme is now complete on the website up until the end of August. Beyond that the proposed outline of trips until November have also been published.
This walk will be starting from the large car park in Stockwood Park: up the main drive and under the barrier on the left just before the new Discovery Centre. Commencing from there at 9.30 am we will walk towards Caddington, on to Woodside and Pepperstock and return to Stockwood by about 1.30 pm. There will probably an opportunity for a quick drink at a hostelry along the way. After the walk anyone who wished to could call into the new museum and/or the gardens, which are well worth a visit, or just go in to the new café for a drink and something to eat.
“… possibly Britain’s most beautiful cinema …” (BBC). If you would like to decide for yourself please ring Wendy to register your interest and leave her a contact telephone number. When The Rex release their programme for March (probably in the middle of February) she will have a matter of hours to confirm with you that you wish to see the film they are offering. These start at 7.30 pm. We will need to leave Dunstable at 6.30 pm to allow time for parking and to enjoy the elegant bar and interior. Tickets cost £8 or £6.50, age dependent!
Northill to Gamlingay
We get to the end of the Greensand Ridge path via Sandy, with its teashop, then with a slight detour, we can visit the World War Two Tempsford SOE barn. Then on to Everton ( with a visit to the pub ), befor finishing at Gamlingay.
For this walk we will park our vehicles in Aldbury and enjoy a circular walk through the surrounding countryside, taking in part of the Grand Union Canal before returning to this pretty village - which itself is worth strolling around, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book.
This is one night away staying just 100metres from St. Paul’s Cathedral. The hostel, formerly the choir boys’ school for the Cathedral, is in London’s business district, which is both safe and quiet after hours. It is ideally located for exploring London with plenty of public transport nearby. The idea is to do some walking and sightseeing and possibly attend a concert but final details will be confirmed later.
The cost will be approximately £29.00 for the overnight stay at the hostel, which will include breakfast. Additional costs include train travel to London.
Enjoy a steak or gammon etc with all the trimmings for £6.49 – and this includes an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink from a wide selection. (Note that parking is free at the adjacent Asda car park after 6 pm.) More details from: http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/food-and-drink/food/wetherspoon-clubs/grill-night.php
Meet time 8pm Meet at "The Gary Cooper" Wetherspoons, Court Drive, Dunstable(part of the Grove Theatre complex)
Don’s ever-popular slide show will include the Christmas trip to the Lake District plus views from a few local meanders. Come along and rekindle some happy memories, or see what you missed!
Meet time 8pm Meet in Room 5, Chew's House, Dunstable
A spring walk through Ashridge starting at the Monument car park, walking down to the canal and along to Berkhamsted for lunch. Our return route passes the Castle, then up into Ashridge again and back to the Monument …. too late for tea I am sure!
where some of our current members will be available to talk about our upcoming range of activities:
Day Walks, Half Day Walks and Mid Week Meanders from Dunstable,
Social Events and Hostelling Week-ends away,
Longer Summer, Autumn and Easter Trips.
Refreshments provided.
Help from existing members with posters and displays would be appreciated.
Clophill to Northill
Because of the time of year, we will have to do the winter route, which deviates off the Greensands Ridge to do some road walking. Then I thought we would take the detour, pass Old Walden church, then pass the Swiss gardens, Shuttleworth collection, Ickwell and the Maypole before finishing at Northill.
Please come along with your ideas for the May to August programme. This is your chance to put your ideas forward. Even if you do not wish to lead a walk or hostel trip your input is welcome.
It has been decided to introduce a new category of walk - a Short Walk - generally 4 and a half miles to 5 miles in length. Dave Tomkins has offered to lead the first of these walks. The idea will be to have a short walk about once a month and normally on a weekend when there is a hostelling trip or, alternatively on the other day of a weekend on which there is a day walk. These walks may appeal to a number of our newer members but also to existing members who want to get out for a breather without committing for the whole day. Please check the following dates:

For lovers - of the countryside – a Valentine’s Day stroll over Dunstable Downs and into Whipsnade Village, through Whipsnade Heath Woods and back via Kensworth. It is hoped to have coffee at the Visitors Centre on the Downs and some may wish to stop at The Farmer’s Boy for further sustenance
This is one night away. Cost £15.95 (Breakfast not included) Here is some information about Tanners Hatch.
If you're looking for an archetypal country cottage to stay in away from the hustle and bustle of city life you've found it at Tanners Hatch. Within its ancient whitewashed walls, you'll be charmed by its ambience and relax in front of an open log fire while enjoying the sounds of the forest. If you're a walker or cyclist, you won't have to wait long to stretch your legs as the hostel is car free and accessible via foot or pedal power through National Trust woods.
It will be a walking weekend and nearer February I will finalise the walks we will be doing.
Once again we will be walking to The Plough at Wingfield. Hopefully, a repeat of last year with a stop off at the church in Houghton Regis.
If you wish to book a meal please speak to Sheila (on Dennis’s mobile, evenings & weekends) regarding the menu and prices.
This morning’s walk starts in Soulbury and uses paths well known to us: the Cross Bucks Way, the Greensand Ridge Walk and the Grand Union Canal. In amongst these we find the cosy cabin in Stockgrove Country Park which will provide hot lunches for those who find sandwiches in January a little unappealing.
This walk is an extended circuit of the Blows Downs Plateau. We shall walk over the Downs to Caddington then by footpaths to Aley Green and Woodside, returning over the Downs via Skimpot. There will be a pub lunch stop and, if the weather is awful, a small diversion to Tesco’s café!
A fairly local and none too strenuous walk this so do please come along and sample a breath of fresh air prior to your Sunday lunch. The intention this morning is to park-up at Hockliffe Church End then set out via Hockliffe village for Eggington, Clipstone and Stonehenge. I doubt that the railway teashop will be open so bring your thermos if you fancy a hot drink during those times when we pause at various points along the way.
Ampthill to Clophill
Todays walk takes us along the Greensands Ridge. We go past Houghton House, then on to Mauldon and the church with its meadow and wood, before finishing at Clophill.
Theatre Visit, The Grove Theatre
Simon Yates is the 'Man who cut the rope' in 'Touching the Void' and has since become one of the leading mountaineers in the UK.
He will be talking at the Grove on 7.30 Tuesday March 10th.
We are planning to get a group together (at discount rates - we need ten people - £11 each)
If you are are interested please contact Ruth at 01582 758483 or email her at ruth
We have received information about the Crickhowell Walking Festival.

Anyone wanting to get an ad-hoc group together to go to this event can get in touch through us at enquiries
Our guest speaker this year will be John Savage, one of the area rights of way secretaries for the Chiltern Society. He is responsible for the areas of Aston Clinton, Buckland, Drayton Beauchamp, Edlesborough, Halton, Ivinghoe, Marsworth, Pitstone, Wendover, Weston Turville.
The nominations are your opportunity to reflect on the high and low points of the previous year’s walking and present the worthy and the perpetrators with an appropriate award.
A casual walk to start the year off. We park at Ivinghoe top car park and then follow the Ridgeway to Ivinghoe village where we may find the teashop open. Then we circle around to Ashridge for a pub stop and on to the Ashridge monument for another cupper, if open.
Despite what it says in the programme there are spare male and female places at Tanners Hatch on the 7th Feb. So if you want to come just get in touch with sue.
Traditionally a post-Christmas trip is always organised for those with energy left to scale a few heights or brazen enough to loll in a pub listening to the exaggerated exploits of others. Whichever category you fit into, you will enjoy an exhilarating time by joining this select group.
Please contact Don to register your interest and perhaps put forward your own ideas for the destination.
How about doing something entirely different for Christmas Day? Last year Steve, Eila, Sue, Julian and their sons went to the Spice in Caddington for an excellent Christmas Lunch. If you fancy getting away from it all - cooking, washing up, naff programmes, deciding whose family you really have to see, how about trying it out this year? The deal is (unless they change it) you get the gourmet menu (choice of any starter, any main course, rice and nan) or, if you prefer, the traditional Xmas Dinner with all the trimmings, plus a sweet and a bottle of wine between you with personal service. All this and the company of friends for approximately £25 all in on Christmas Day. If you are interested contact Eila on 01582 731026 during November and she will confirm the details. If you definitely want to come a deposit of £10 will be required.
The antidote to Christmas shopping! A gentle walk over the Downs (stopping for coffee) to Studham (for lunch) and back round the far side of Kensworth Quarry.
Meet time 9.30 am pm
Meet at The Square, Dunstable
Woburn to Ampthill. Continuing on the Greensand Ridge Walk we head out through the deer park, passing the Abbey, before heading for Eversholt and Millbrook to the finish at Ampthill.
An opportunity for aspiring new walkers to come and get their boots muddy.
I hope that the weather today will be dry, sunny and frosty – I like that when we walk at this time of the year. After a short drive from Dunstable we shall park our vehicles adjacent to the roundabout at Whipsnade Heath – you know where I mean. The intention is to take an anti-clockwise route to Studham passing alongside the zoo for a free peek at the animals and then across the golf course, where of course we will be most warmly welcomed. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the tea shop at Bell Farm will be open. To close the circle we will walk by way of Holywell, Dovehouse Lane and IOW Lane. Anybody wishing to finish the walk at Studham, for lunch at the pub perhaps, is free to do so.
This area has all the ingredients for a really pretty walk – woodland, green lanes and footpaths, open fields, streams and a lake. In addition our route will pass through two of Bedfordshire’s most attractive villages – Northill and Ickwell. Whilst the plan is to stop at a pub (and Shuttleworth restaurant serves hot and cold food all day), it is advisable to bring something to eat and drink “just in case”.
We have been down to this area several times. It’s a beautiful part of the country to visit. Depending on the weather we can walk the coast or stay inland. We’ve got all the South Downs to explore.
Come and join us at our new members welcome evening at Chews House, High Street South, Dunstable where some of our current members will be available to talk about our upcoming range of activities:
Day Walks from Dunstable,
Half Day Walks from Dunstable,
Mid Week Meanders,
Social Events
and Hostelling Week-ends away,
Longer Summer, Autumn and Easter Trips.
Previous trips have been to Iceland, Scotland, Morocco, Luxemburg, Brittany.
Refreshments provided.
We will start walking from the Youth Hostel at Milton Keynes. This is going to be a figure of eight walk so we should be back at the hostel in time for lunch. Hopefully I can arrange for us to eat our packed lunch in the hostel grounds. Then the afternoon walk will be out from the hostel in another direction. Contact me if you would like to join or leave at lunch time.
Leighton Buzzard to Woburn. This might as well be a tea shop walk; we could start with coffee in Leighton Buzzard then on to Rushmere before deviating off the route for Stockgrove Country Park café, before finishing in the teashop/pub in Woburn. All on the Greensand Ridge Walk.
We start at The Green in Caddington, head towards Skimpot Lane and across to Dallow Downs, which provide some good views. Although a bit “up and down” this walk is relatively easy without many stiles to negotiate. Why not give it a go and you can reward yourself with a drink to celebrate afterwards!
Meet time 9.30 am @ Priory Middle School
or 9.45 am at The Green, Caddington
Woburn to Husborne Crawley. Today we make use of the GRW through Woburn Park to Eversholt and beyond before picking-up a short section of the John Bunyan Trail, followed by a hop across the fields to Woburn Experimental Farm via Castle Hill and our finish at, or close to, the White Horse. Yes, I know that 6 – 7 miles isn’t very far for a day walk but the days are drawing-in fast now. Plus, we lose time by starting and finishing with refreshments and there’s potential for a further 3 stops along the way if anybody is really tired!
The initial letters of the 7 parishes we visit in Part 1 & 2 are: AG, AH, E, HC, R, W and WS. I’ve tried (without success) to come-up with a mnemonic. Can you? Answers on a postcard to anybody but me please.
Please let Eila know your meal choices for the Wetherspoons Meal and a deposit of £3 each by 14th November. (see listing on 15th December for details).
See Stop Press for details. This is being run by the Friends of Studham Common for £9.50 including lunch (we do conservation work for the FOSC from time to time). You can also meet them at the mill at 11 a.m. the tour finishes at about 3pm
