The Dunstable and District Walking and Hostelling Group

Programme January-March 2012

Welcome to the Bogtrotters...

The Bogtrotters are a small but disparate group of about 80 walkers, hikers and hostellers. We also run a surprisingly diverse range of activities. Some members will be found frequently on half day and full day walks based in and around Dunstable. Others will only be found on longer hostelling trips in the mountains. Some of our members relish the more traditional simple (basic) style of hostelling, and will participate in camping barn weekends in the Peak District, others will only go on trips where a certain minimum level of comfort is guaranteed. Some of our members are predominantly social, coming out to meals and evening activities.

The group was formed in 1966 as the Dunstable Local YHA Group. Since then a large number of our members have moved away from the Dunstable area and are now dotted all over the country and indeed the world. Some of these members still frequently attend weekend and trips away, but are rarely to be seen in Dunstable.

New members are always welcome. Prospective members are welcome to get in touch with anyone on our contact list to discuss which of the group’s activities would be most attractive to them. Alternatively you can always just turn up to one of the walks. Look out for a group with walking boots and woolly hats.

Day walks usually involve meeting at the Yum Yum car park (next to the police station) in West Street, Dunstable if the walk is on a Sunday (free parking). On Saturdays the walks meet outside the Priory School in Britain Street (off High Street South). Recently we have also started occasionally to meet at French’s Avenue Car Park (by the green).

Sometimes the walks will involve driving out from Dunstable. Members often share cars to do this and this is arranged on an ad hoc basis at the meeting place. It is normally polite to offer a small contribution to the cost of fuel to the driver. This is rarely more than £1.

Social activities are either based in individual member’s houses, or at the venue (bowling, pub meals, the Rex cinema etc.) or in rooms 1 or 5 of Chews House. Chews house is situated in High Street South next to the Little Theatre.

If you are interested in joining us, then give us a ring and we can suggest an appropriate event to suit you.

Ramblings from the Chair...

Hello, welcome to the January to March programme of events.

Following the funeral of Dave Tomkins we have received the following message from Rita Tomkins.

Dear Boggies,
Thank you so much ,everyone, donations in memory of David amounted to £360.00. The money has been forwarded to each charity named.
I wish you all the very best for the future.
Regards  Rita Tomkins
——————————-

At our recent AGM we decided that this year we would raise money for Keech Hospice Care where Dave spent some of his last few days.

Welcome to the new members of the committee and many thanks to the retiring members for all their efforts over the last few years.

Also many thanks to the new walk leaders (and returning older leaders) who have helped to make this such a vibrant and diverse programme.

In March we are off to Petra in Jordan, unfortunately with 15 people going, this trip is now pretty nearly full.  We were going to go last year and so many people had already expressed an interest.

In February we are off to Tanners Hatch, a classic, basic hostel set in the Surrey woods near Leatherhead, this trip is still booking.  Further ahead Don will be running an Easter trip to the Lake District at the very beginning of the next programme so if you want to go you will need to think about that soon.

This is my 4th year as Chair and I am finding it a little difficult to think of interesting or uplifting things to say in these ramblings.  The front page of the programme is in part intended to be an introduction to what we do and an encouragement to new members to join.  For the next programme would one of our newer members like to write a small piece entitled “A new members introduction to the boggies….” or something similar.  Prize for the best entry is to see it printed on the front of the next programme.

Julian

Before a walk...

Please note that although this programme is correct at the time of going to press there may be last minute changes nearer the time of an event. When possible please check on the website for any last minute changes. We will attempt to contact anyone without internet access if a major change occurs.

New members are advised to contact the walk leader before turning up, that way we can ensure we look out for them and make sure that we do not leave them behind.

Notices

  • Some of our walks are planned to be accessible by public transport.  However bus times and even bus services are subject to change and walk details will sometimes vary to those set out in this programme.  It is advisable to ring or e-mail the walk leader to obtain up-to-date information if public transport is involved.
  • Throughout this programme various meeting points are mentioned.  Those members unfamiliar with these rendezvous should phone the walk leader or event contact for guidance.

  • All Bogtrotters are reminded that they are most welcome to attend any and all of our meetings – Committee, Planning and Annual.  Should anyone wish to see the minutes then please contact our secretary who will furnish you with a copy.

  • Children are welcome on our walks if accompanied by an adult member of their family.  Any children who come will remain the responsibility of the accompanying adult.
  • If members wish to bring dogs on our walks please contact the walk leader to check on suitability.
  • Photos of our activities, together with names of those participating, frequently appear on our website.  Please let us know if this is not acceptable.
  • Hostelling trips.  Members who wish to arrange their own bed & breakfast accommodation whilst the group is staying in a nearby hostel are welcome to do so.  They can then join us for the  daytime activities and evening meal, if they wish.  They would still be welcome to share travel arrangements.

  • On day walks or weekend trips members may choose to share cars or take their own.  Before leaving the meeting place please make it clear to the walk leader if you are prepared to take passengers, if you are willing to use your car to transfer drivers when this is necessary and if, for any reason, you will need to leave the walk early.  Please do not leave the walk without telling the leader and letting him/her know which passengers you will be taking, if any.
  • We try to make sure that we keep the number of emails we send out to a minimum.  However these emails have been invaluable reminders for a number of recent social events and have ensured that these events were successful and not a drain on the clubs resources.  If you feel you are getting too many emails than let us know.
  • Before a walk starts members are entitled to obtain a clear and, as far as is possible, accurate description of the walk that they are about to undertake.  They should be aware however that it is not possible for us to walk every walk in advance and even when a path is familiar to us things may have changed since we were last there.  Different walk leaders have developed different styles of Walk Introduction.  Some give a formal Health and Safety talk, others a more general Descriptive Talk and others dislike the enforced formality and give only a fairly perfunctory introduction!  However before you come out with us, if you are in any doubt about the walk you are going to undertake, or your own ability to complete it, you should explain your concerns to the walk leader first.

Very popular last year.
Come and enjoy a traditional ‘Burns’ night on Wednesday, 25th January 2012 @ 7.30pm
Lesley Grierson-Hill has foolishly been persuaded to host a ‘Burns Supper’ again on 25th January at her house.
For those of you unfamiliar with what this is all about - Burns Night celebrates the life and poetry of Robert Burns who was Scotland's best-loved bard. Suppers have been held in his honour for over 200 years. So … with tradition and true Scottish ancestry in mind – you are invited to celebrate in style with:
Cock- a-leekie soup
Haggis (veggie version also), Neeps & Tatties
A scottish dessert you would care to bring

Entry requirements are really strict: you need to wear something with a Scottish flavour or bring a poem, ode or music suitable for the occasion or all of these !! (Experienced Potato mashers are most welcome a little earlier – as are those competent to ‘set the haggis alight’!). Give me a call on 01582 660135 if you would like to come.
